Tessy Thomas - The Missile Women

Written By Hamsamalini Chandrasekaran on May 9, 2012 | 2:16 PM

Tessy Thomas - The missile women
Hailed as a pioneer in male-dominated India, Tessy Thomas, the 49-year-old scientist at the Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO)  juggles domestic rules with her day job - as the country's top ballistic missile expert.

Being the associate project director of the 3,000 km range Agni-III missile project, she continued as the project director for mission Agni IV which was successfully tested in 2011. Based on her sincere career, Tessy was appointed as the Project Director  for 5,000 km range Agni-V in 2009 and based at the Advanced Systems Laboratory in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, India.

Tessy Thomas, being the project director for the long-range nuclear capable missile, played a key role in making India's most potent prestigious inter-continental ballistic missile AGNI V. The missile was successfully tested on 19 April 2012. Celebrated as "Missile Women" and "Agniputri" in the local media, she has lent a new and unusual face to the secretive world of India's DRDO.

She was born in  AlappuzhaKerala to a small-businessman father and a homemaker mother and did her engineering graduation fromGovernment Engineering College, Thrissur. She grew up near a rocket launching station and says her fascination with rockets and missiles began then. She also has an M.Tech in Guided Missile from the Institute of Armament Technology, Pune (now known as the Defence Institute of Advanced Technology). She says another woman - her mother - is an inspiration for her, but she also misses her father.
Tessy Thomas - Homemaker
While her siblings became engineers, managers and bank officers, Tessy rose to dizzy heights as a defence scientist.

The "Missilemaker" is a great "Homemaker" also. She is a mother of a son and wife of a naval officer. She insists there is no gender discrimination in predominantly male DRDO, where about 200 female colleagues work in its dozens of ordnance factories and research facilities.

'From my school days I wanted to do engineering for reasons I don't know. I completed my engineering and took up M Tech in guided missile,' said Tessy who joined the DRDO in 1988.

Among scientists, father of India's missile program A.P.J. Abdul Kalam is her inspiration. 'When I joined in 1988, Dr Abdul Kalam was a director of DRDL (Defence Research and Development Laboratory) and was the one who directed me to join inertial navigation group.'

Thomas says she decided to go into missiles- which she regards as instruments of peace because of their deterrence value - after watching rocket tests from a launch center near her home. She feels balancing the jobs of a homemaker and a scientist is challenging. 'It was tough when my son was in school.,' she conceded. Her son 'Tejas', named after India's indigenously developed light combat aircraft, is now doing his final year engineering in Vellore.

Momstimes, takes this prospect to salute Madam Tessy Thomas for her courageous deeds and stands inspiring as a role model for every women to do their best in home and office and also wishes a great success for her next challenge of working on mission and guidance of the multiple independent re-entry vehicle with proposed new technology to deliver multiple warheads with a single missile.

3 steps to Cope with an upset stomach

The combination, familiar to most of us, of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and sometimes abdominal pain or cramping is a classic indication of gastrointestinal infections ('tummy bugs') or food poisoning from contaminated food or drinks ("travellers's diarrhea). In most cases, home treatment quickly clears up the problems .

Although cases of diarrhea tend to last only a day or two and require no specific medications, moderate to severe diarrhea is often best treated with over-the-counter remedies . Products that contain loperamide will bring immediate relief from diarrhea ,but make sure that  you seek medical advice if symptoms aren't  better within two days, get worse or if other problems develop . The following measures will help you recover quickly.

1. DRINK PLENTY WATER:

Even if you're feeling sick , try to take frequent sips of plain water , herb teas , diluted juice, lemon juice with salt and sugar added or clear soups . This is important for everyone but especially for babies and young children, older people and those with existing illness, who are more susceptible to dehydration and its effects . Those who are vulnerable should take a sip every 10 minutes or so. Specific dehydration fluids, available from pharmacies, that replace the correct balance of salts (electrolytes) in the blood are the best. You should encourage a baby to carry on feeding from the breast or bottle as usual.

2. KEEP IT BLAND:

As symptoms improve, eat only soft , bland foods to maintain nutition and reduce symptoms until you're feeling better .

3. AVOID FATTY FOODS:

When you begin to feel like eating normally, be sure to steer clear of fatty and fried foods, which can make you feel nauseous and worsen diarrhea. Also avoid milk and milk products, such as cheese and ice cream, and citrus fruits. Beware of sugar - laden foods or drinks (cakes, biscuits and cola-style drinks). Continue to choose base meals around bland, starchy foods. Try bananas, rice, boiled potatoes, toast, pasta and crackers. Skinless baked chicken breast is a good choice if you feel like some protein .

SIGNS OF DEHYDRATION

If you or an adult member of your family is suffering from diarrhea and or vomiting, look out for the signs of dehydration listed below .

Dehydration in babies and young children is discussed under ...
  1. THIRST
  2. DRY MOUTH AND LIPS
  3. REDUCED URINE OUTPUT
  4. DARK-COLORED URINE
  5. DRY SKIN
  6. FEELING TIRED
  7. FEELING GIDDY OR FAINTING

I loved each and every line of it. It was a discussion by three beauty experts - Julie Lindh, Esther Josezef and JoElla Milan.

I have shared here the extract of the article I read........

It’s not that makeup and hair make you beautiful. But what feeling pretty really does is help you act the way you feel. When you feel beautiful, usually acting beautiful follows. Knowing you look good lifts your spirits and lends you an awesome energy that, in turn, you spread around.
~ Esther Joszef for Epoch Times

Smile and be happy. A smile is the most beautiful thing in the world, and it is contagious.
Fashion, cosmetics, and skin care are also important. Every woman can be beautiful.
Dress in a style that is comfortable for you, whether you like business, vintage, casual, or dressy.
~JoElla Milan

A woman is beautiful when she embraces her femininity with confidence and calmness. She is beautiful inside and outside. Lifestyle rituals help to enhance confidence because taking care of yourself feels good.

Dawn & Dusk Skin Care Tips for 30s, 40s and 60s

Written By Hamsamalini Chandrasekaran on March 23, 2012 | 7:34 AM

Beauty is women. The external beauty of women is delivered through skin- essential theme building personality. Beauty adds to our personality giving us the confidence to be ourselves. It helps us shine.
Here are some recommended beauty tips that could be followed at home.

If you are in your 30s

Dawn

Wash with a gentle cleanser, followed by a moisturizer. If you have oily skin, use a cleanser but skip the moisturizer. All skin types should finish up with sunscreen and, budget permitting, a vitamin C cream that contains ascorbic acid.

Dusk
Rinse with a mild cleanser. Oily-skinned or acne-prone women should follow up with a prescription product that combats breakouts and photo ageing (sun damage). Women with drier skin can start applying retinol creams to help reverse damage.

If you are in your 40s

Dawn

All skin types should use a gentle soap or cleanser, followed by a vitamin C cream, a sunscreen and if your skin is dry, and a moisturizer that won't clog your face.

Dusk
Wash with a gentle soap or cleanser, such as a foaming face wash, then apply a retinol product or for stronger exfoliation, something with retin-A.

If you are in your 50s

Dawn

Whatever be your skin type, rinse with a gentle cleanser, and follow with a moisturizer.

Dusk
Wash with a gentle soap or cleanser then apply any vitamin A product. Don't exfoliate even a washcloth can be too harsh on more mature skin.

If you are in your 60s

Dawn

Wash with a mild soap or cleanser, and then apply a gentle moisturizer containing a sunscreen.

Dusk
Before going to bed, apply a prescription retinoid cream (women with oily skin should use it every day; for women with drier skin, every other day or two to three times per week is sufficient). Finish up with a gentle moisturizing cream to soothe the skin

CLEANSING
Cleansing removes dirt, bacteria and dead skin cells from the surface of the skin. Cleansing skin care is perhaps one of the most important things we can do to help keep our skin looking healthy and beautiful. Without cleansing, our faces would develop a build-up of materials that would make our faces dirty, shiny and dull. The bacteria and dirt on our face would also increase the risk of bacterial infections, leading to skin problems like acne. Cleansing is particularly important for people with oily skin, who have excess oil on their face which attracts dirt and debris.

Cleansing should not just stop with the face. Body cleansing is also important. However, a different type of cleansing may be needed for the body, than the cleansing which is needed for the face.

TONING
Facial toning does a number of things to keep your skin looking healthy. Firstly, it removes traces of dirt and debris that are left after cleansing. It also restores the skin's natural pH balance.

Toning is very beneficial for the pores. It helps tighten them up so that there is less chance of infection and acne. A good toner can tone up the skin and make it appear smoother

MOISTURIZING

Moisturizing helps hydrate the skin and prevent it from further moisture loss. It can also provide a protective barrier to stop moisture from escaping from the skin. Water and many skin care products can strip the skin of moisture. Moisturizing lotion helps replace that loss moisture. It is very important for people with dry skin, who have less sebum (the skin's natural oil) on their skin.

Face masks can also have a moisturizing effect. Moisturizing face masks are very good for people with dry skin who may need some extra moisture and attention.

EXFOLIATING

Exfoliating removes the surface layer of skin, along with any dirt, debris and dead skin cells. It provides a more thorough clean than cleansing. Removing the top layer of skin helps the new healthy skin to appear.

Easy tips to preserve your favorite jeans

Written By Hamsamalini Chandrasekaran on March 14, 2012 | 8:55 AM

Jeans from Denim has been very popular form of casual dress around the world, for decades. Historic brands include Levi's, Lee, and Wrangler. Jeans come in various fits that are comfortable for ladies and men of all ages. It includes leggings, boyfriend, skinny, tapered, straight, boot cut, mommy-cut, maternity, junior fits, heritage fits, slim, straight and flare fits.

Frequent washing of jeans have so far resulted not only in color fade but also couldnt stretch the jeans for a longer life. No matter you throw in washer or do a hand wash with normal water and pat to dry, your jeans is not so as it was purchased. An article  from  ‘The Wall Street Journal’ says that throwing your jeans in the washing machine agitates the cotton in the fabric causing it to ‘bloom’ and then tighten up and shorten the fibers.

Jeans

Here are some tips which I learnt and practised to keep my jeans always new.

  • After two or three usage of jeans, try to find spot that requires cleaning. Use a damp cloth with a cleaning agent or mild shampoo to remove any stains or dirt. Please avoid using any chemicals or bleaching agents to remove the stains. After cleaning use a clean damp cloth to wipe off the soapy effect  and hang it to dry in a room temperature and give a mild steam iron or in bathroom while you shower so that the steam will help to freshen and restore the shape to the fabric while steaming out creases and wrinkles.
  • Can give a full wash of jeans once in six months by soaking in a larger volume of pile with mild soap or shampoo and rinse and then give a air dry.

Written By Hamsamalini Chandrasekaran on February 2, 2012 | 2:34 PM

Peer pressure a fairly self-explanatory term is literally the pressure we feel from our partners or friends to do certain things, eat certain foods, speak certain words, teasing or bullying, smoking and so on which we are not in favor of.

Peer pressure can be both positive and negative, but for the most part when we hear about peer pressure it is the harmful variety. Peer pressure can put you at risk, make you compromise your morals and deter you from your future plans. Rather than let peer pressure sway you, learn how to defeat negative peer pressure and get on with your own life!

If the peer pressure are positive like the pressure from friends to show off your beautiful voice in a concert then its not an issue. But generally the term refers to the negative side only.  In such a case how to defeat the peer pressure.

  1. Need to cultivate self-confidence, self-acceptance and self love that will allow you to remain comfort with your ideals and interests even in the face of pressure from others.
  2. Join clubs or groups whose members believe in the same thing as you.
  3. Cultivate friendships with people who do not pressure you
  4. Distance yourself from critical friends who bully
  5. Have a few excuses ready for why you cannot participate in the activity that you are being pressurized.
  6. Have the support of your parents
It is matter for which you should be readily prepared for, it is not something you should worry about giving in to. Know yourself, love yourself and be yourself and don't let anyone to dominate you.

Written By Hamsamalini Chandrasekaran on November 24, 2011 | 8:44 PM

Most parents misunderstand weaning as coaxing the baby to give up the breast or bottle milk. Weaning basically means the gradual transition of a babys diet from milk to other forms of nourishment.

To Do and not to Do during weaning:
  1. Wash hands before handling food to avoid bacterial contamination.
  2. Cook meats thoroughly to ensure all bateria is destroyed.
  3. Reheating of food must be done properly. If reheating liquids, bring it to a rolling boil.
  4. Do not leave food standing around for long periods at room temperature before feeding baby. Place leftovers in the fidge once food has cooled and remember to cover the food.
  5. Do not keep unfinished foods once they have been served. Due to saliva contamination, food will turn bad quickly.
  6. Once weaning gets underway, keep baby adequaetely hydrated with enough fluids in form of water, fruit juices and soups.
  7. Fried foods are not advised to be fed to infants before 10 months.
  8. Do not add salt or other salty seasonings and sauces into baby weaning food. The natural salt present in foods is enough to meet the needs of baby. Additional salt can affect the kidney which are yetto be developed.
  9. Avoid sugar as it pumps up calories with no positive effect on nutritients. This can pave the way for childhood obesity and dental problem as a result of sweet tooth.
  10. Do step by step with love and patience so that it is a much fulfilling experience for both mother and child.
