Maintaining Sarees

Written By Unknown on March 6, 2009 | 2:11 PM

We , ladies walk like peacock feathered with Beautiful sarees. But I have seen and myself have experienced great struggle being unknown to proper way of maintaining sarees especially Silk sarees. I have collected some tips from textile manufacturers of my hometown , Salem, tamilnadu of how to maintain sarees and silk sarees.
Pink and light grey art silk saree designed with floral print. As shown yellow art silk blouse fabric is available and also can be customized from 32 to 40 inches as per your style or pattern subject to fabric limitation. (Slight variation in color and print is possible.)

  1. Do not use soap for the first three washes. Gently rinse in plain cold water.
  2. Mild detergent can be used for the subsequent washes.
  3. Wash the pallu, border and body separately.
  4. Avoid washing the saree with inferior quality material or powders with bleach effect.
  5. You can use a protein shampoo with warm/cold water. The shampoo protein will feed the protein in the silk. Even school uniforms can be given shampoo wash to maintain the material as it is.
  6. Do not use chemicals – these may damage and reduce the lifespan of the silk.
  7. Avoid strictly usage of brush to especially silk saree as it might tear the zari.
  8. Don't ever use washer for silks.
  9. Avoid twisting the silk to empty water .
  10. Do not bundle after washing, dry the saree immediately.
  11. Remove the water by rolling the saree in a dry towel and hang it on to a padded hanger.
  12. Ensure that the silk saree is out of direct sunlight.
  13. In case of stains, wash with cold water immediately.
  14. Hard stains, can be overcome by soaking the stained area with petrol and brushing with a soft cloth.
  15. Allow it to dry as soon as possible.

  1. For treating food stains like milk, ice-cream, chocolate, gravy, etc., use a dry-clean solvent or apply detergent and then wash it with cold water. Then use a stain remover, it should be washed in hot water.
  2. Nail polish stains can be removed as we rub acetone on the area.
  3. Greasy stains can be removed by pressing lightly with absorbent like talc. Once this is done, the talc should be brushed off and stain remover applied. The stain can then be washed off in the hottest water possible.
  4. Stains like blood, deodorant, egg, meat varieties can be cleared with detergent. They should be soaked in cool water and laundered.
  5. For more stain removal its better to go for dry cleaning itself.
